Info Day - CEF Digital Call 3: 5G and Edge Cloud for Smart Communities
On Tuesday, 7 November 2023, the European Commission (DG Connect) organized an Info Day on the third CEF Digital call for the 5G & Edge Cloud for Smart Communities action.
This Info Day aimed to support and guide call applicants for their upcoming project submissions, as well as invited stakeholders to connect with potential partners through matchmaking.

5GSC Community Conference
This event brought together key stakeholders, including mobile network operators, alternative operators, equipment manufacturers, and public authorities, to facilitate a dynamic exchange of ideas, insights, and best practices for the 5G for Smart Communities action under CEF – Digital.
During the event, representatives from DG CNECT and HaDEA delivered informative presentations about the third call for proposals for 5G for Smart Communities, which was expected to be open from October 2023 to February 2024. They also shared valuable lessons learned from the second call.
Panelists, including representatives from municipalities and infrastructure operators, explored 5G best practices for Smart City solutions in Europe. They discussed challenges related to 5G coverage, both indoors and outdoors, along with potential solutions. Additionally, the event delved into 5G use cases in Edge Cloud, featuring an introduction by DG CNECT's Cloud and Software Unit.
To conclude the event, two breakout sessions were organized, enabling participants to gain practical insights on how to apply to the third 5G for Smart Communities call for proposals from both public authorities and operators' perspectives. These open forums fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, provided valuable insights on preparing for the application process, highlighted important considerations, and shared lessons learned.

Launch Event: 5G for Smart Communities Support Platform
The event brought together interested stakeholders from mobile network operators, alternative operators, equipment manufacturers, and public authorities to share ideas and insights on Europe's Digital Decade and policy objectives for 5G for Smart Communities.
The day featured presentations by DG CNECT and HaDEA outlining the policy objectives for 5G for Smart Communities in the context of digital targets for 2030. A roundtable discussion followed, in which we explored the benefits of collaboration between mobile network operators, alternative operators, equipment manufacturers, and public authorities.
After a networking lunch, breakout sessions were organised according to thematic areas of Health, Education, Smart Cities, Emergency and Disaster Relief. Selected projects from CEF Digital call 1 on 5G for Smart Communities presented their projects and shared useful tips and lessons learned from the application projects with the interested stakeholders.
The event concluded with a wrap-up session and final remarks by DG CNECT.
